David J. Shulkin, MD

 

 David J. Shulkin, M.D. is President and Chief Executive Officer of Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Shulkin previously served in numerous  physician leadership roles including the Chief Medical Officer of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Temple University Hospital, the Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital, and the Hospital of the University of  Pennsylvania. Dr. Shulkin has served in academic positions including the Chairman of Medicine and Vice Dean at Drexel University School of Medicine.  As an entrepreneur Dr. Shulkin founded and served as the Chairman and CEO of DoctorQuality, Inc one of the first consumer orientated sources of information for quality and safety in healthcare.  Dr. Shulkin has been on the editorial board’s of numerous journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association. Currently the editor of  Hospital Physician and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of  Patient Safety,  the Journal of  Clinical Outcomes Management and the Journal of Disease Management. 

Dr. Shulkin is a board-certified internist, a fellow of the American College of Physicians, Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein School of Medicine and a  Senior Fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute in Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania, his internship at Yale University School of Medicine, and a residency and Fellowship in General Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Medical Center. He had advanced training in outcomes research and economics as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Shulkin has received numerous awards and was named one of the country's top Health care leaders for the next century by Modern Healthcare,  the International Leader in Health Care Award by the Healthcare Forum and most recently in 2008 was selected as one of the 12th most powerful hysician executives in America by Modern Physician and Modern Healthcare.
